Top 3 Exterior Cleaning Tasks You Should Do Every Spring

Spring Cleaning Jul 6, 2022

You’re probably familiar with the tradition of spring cleaning. Perhaps you even follow the tradition yourself. But, if you’re like most people, you really only focus on the inside of your home. You might clear extra items from the backs of drawers and cabinets, vacuum thoroughly, and dust spaces that you have not dusted since last spring. But what about the outside of your home? As it turns out, there are some exterior cleaning tasks you should tackle every spring, too.

Power Washing Your Siding

If your home is sided, you should pull out the power washer and wash the siding each spring using a special soap solution designed for use on vinyl. Vinyl siding tends to pick up road dust, dirt that gets splashed up from the garden during a rainstorm, and deposits from rainwater.

The longer this debris sits on your siding, the more likely it is to cause permanent stains. Power washing your siding every spring will ensure the siding keeps its normal color and will ultimately extend its life.

Cleaning Your Gutters

You may not spend much time thinking about your gutters since they’re way up there on the roof. But, they fulfill an essential role of draining water off your roof so that you do not get roof leaks. If the gutters become clogged, water may seep down the side of your home, leading to stains and even a leaky basement.

Spring is a good time to clean your gutters since leaves and other debris will have washed into them over the winter. While you’re cleaning, keep an eye out for little holes in the gutters or other signs of damage that may indicate that the gutters require repair.

Cleaning Your Roof

It’s a good idea to just give your roof a gentle sweep. Remove any leaves or other debris that has blown up there. This will keep the debris from moving into the gutters and clogging them. It will also keep the debris from trapping moisture against the roof, which could cause the shingles to deteriorate.

You can sweep debris away with just a long-handled broom. Make sure someone else is holding the ladder as you do so.

If you take care of just these three exterior cleaning tasks every spring, the exterior of your home will stay in better shape over the years. It’s worth spending a weekend cleaning if it means you don’t have to replace your siding, roof, or gutters as soon. If you need help with completing these tasks, contact an exterior residential cleaning service to discuss your options.
